PARIS HILTON: WHAT’S A GIRL TO DO

June 18th, 2007 by Ike Ude

In jail, out of jail, one minute, back in again, all in a blink of an eye. Thus, the Paris Hilton drama continues, at fever pitch.

Some have expressed extreme displeasure at her very early release and other reactions have been just the opposite. Her return to jail will surely assuage those who disapprove of her, and on the other hand displease her champions.

And it is the very extraordinary polarizing tendencies engendered by Ms. Hilton that arrest public imagination, for better or worse.

Ultimately, the heiress is hardly a danger to herself or society. In fact one would argue that she entertains, amuses society far more than she displeases. So, why? One may ask, does she seem above the law-is anyone really above the law?

Speaking to Barbara Walters over the June 9th/10th weekend, the 26-year-old heiress confessed, “I use to act dumb. No more.” Adding spiritually, “Now, I would like to make a difference. God has given me this new chance.”

Even more profoundly, and shocking is Ms. Hilton redemptive and considerate tone: “I would hope going forward that the public and the media will focus on more important things like the men and women serving our country in Iraq and other places around the world,” she told Ms. Walters.

From all accounts, a mere overnight stay in police detention is not a cake-walk, at all. In light of this, even cynics must acknowledge that Paris wasn’t simply acting when she confessed, this weekend, her jail experience, “I was not eating or sleeping. I was severely depressed and felt as if I was in a cage.” Apparently, it’s not easy to make such a quantum acclimation, especially from deluxe lifestyle to a creepy prison hole, is it?

In the end, it is very likely that the massive popularity of Paris Hilton and her likes owe more to their laissez-faire attitude in an age where public figures are too scripted, too guarded to the extent that there is barely a distinction between, say, a politician, clergy, rock-star and such. They each want to be perceived as the perfect role-model or feels obliged to act like one. Where are our James Deans, Monroes, Jimi Hendrixes, Elizabeth Taylors, Mick Jaggers, of yore, etc. What a bore. YAWN!!
