questions for BASSAM FELLOWS
interview Iké Udé

Bassam & Fellows photography Timothy Greenfield-Sanders click image to enlarge
Iké Udé Where do you ultimately call home and why?
Craig Bassam: We consider each of our houses “home.” Each is an inspiring piece of architecture, and each is located in an inspiring location: lake (in Lugano, Switzerland), forest (in New Canaan, CT) and desert (in Palm Springs, CA).

Iké: What are any difficulties you face bringing together your two disciplines, i.e. architecture and fashion?
CB: We don’t really see them as difficulties, so as much as differences. Fashion is built for change. Architecture is built to last.

Iké: Do you have to reconcile these differences? And to what end?
CB: We reconcile the difference in that we are only interested in fashion that is more long lasting. While we like the fast-paced nature of fashion, we are not interested in pushing fashion forward for the sake of fashion. Our philosophy is more simple: is the object, or architecture, beautiful, or not?

Iké: When did it first occur to you to overlap your distinct talents?
CB: While undertaking the re-branding of Bally. Creating a new brand identity touches all aspects of design — from fashion, to architecture, to graphics — and each design discipline must communicate the same message. It was a natural collaboration.

Nature influences everything we do — it is our main inspiration.

Iké: Do you have any abiding design philosophy?
CB: We describe our philosophy as “Craftsman Modern.” We believe that nature is a true part of luxury living, and that contemporary design can also be handcrafted, comfortable, and warm. Nature influences everything we do — it is our main inspiration — especially as it relates to materials. We are modernists, in that we want to create things that are pure, and enduring. And we also want to bring human scale and comfort to everything we do.

Iké: So far, what’s an excellent example of your combined design?
CB: The BassamFellows men’s shoe collection. The collection is beautifully made and has enduring lasting shoemaker's models for shaping shoes — yet the impact is decidedly modern, not classic.

Iké: What is your favorite medium in furniture design?
CB: Wood, and leather.

Iké: And in fashion?
CB: Leather.

Iké: Would you eventually aim at more mass appeal for your work?
CB: We believe that good design always has mass appeal. Our products, however, do not currently have mass accessibility due to the materials we use and the quality we demand. Unfortunately, quality costs.

Iké: What’s the price range of your products?
CB: From $850 for a pair of hand made men’s shoes, to $13,000 for a solid Santos Rosewood and leather daybed.

Iké: Craig, how much does Scott bring to bear in your architecture work, and, conversely, what do you contribute to Scott’s fashion?
CB: Scott has helped me focus on creating and building design signatures into my work, while I think I lend a sense of proportion and detail to his.

Iké: Where can one buy your work?
CB: At <www.bassamfellows.com>, or at R 20th Century, 82 Franklin Street in Tribeca.
