questions for OLIVIER GUIGNI
Olivier Guigni photography Iké Udé click image to enlarge Name:
Oliver Guigni.
Place of residency:
14th Street, NYC.
Education:
The family garden.
Zodiac Sign:
Sagittarius, rising sign in Leo.
Favorite flower, orchid, and plant:
Black Iris; Cattelaya; Euphorbia.
What led you to become a Professional florist?
It was the only way to live in the big city with nature!
Who would you most love to design a flower arrangement for?
Josephine Baker, if she was still with us.
Who is your favorite floral photographer?
Christopher Beane and Paul Solberg are two of my favorites.
What exactly are “form flowers” and what is the best way to use them?
Form flowers are the flowers that make up the focal point of the arrangement, usually because of their interesting color or shape. Because my designs generally feature only one or two types of flowers in a mass, whatever flower I am using becomes the “form flower;” the entire arrangement is a fluid focal point. Because my designs generally feature only one or two types of flowers in a mass, whatever flower I am using becomes the ‘Form flower.’
Anything featuring jasmine, mimosa, French violet or lily of the valley. And the design, of course, is integral to evoking feelings of romance, passion or love.
How often do you employ filler flowers?
It really varies on the design or season. But there is always the possibility of using what is typically seen as a “filler flower” for the entire arrangement—unexpected and usually stunning!
What are the top aesthetic values of Blooming plants, tropical plants, and Topiaries?
The shapes, curves, and the flexibility.
Are your flowers hand-selected domestically or internationally?
Both. From upstate New York, to Holland, France, Ecuador….
What is the shortest and longest a cut flower can last for, and where are the best sources to purchase them?
From one day to one week. Cut orchids tend to last long, as do cut branches (often more than a week) whereas cut jasmine or gardenia last only a day if they’re not refrigerated.
floral arrangement by Olivier Guigni click image to enlarge Are most floral practitioners compartmentalized into one area, such as interior plants, floral, exterior plants, gardening, lawns, trees, etc?
They can definitely run the gamut—I do!
Given the vulgar proliferation of the fast food version of bonsai, how can one distinguish between a quickly grown bonsai imposter and the real thing?
Bonsai plants are not my specialty, but I think if you look closely and speak with the vendor it is possible to determine which one is a mature plant.
What are your favorite annual and biennial plants?
Scented geraniums, irises, and mint.
Is it absolutely necessary that one study floral design in school?
Absolutely not.
Which flower has the most difficult-to-prononce botanical name and which has the cheesiest common name?
As for difficult, I can’t really answer that question, and as for cheesy, I truly do not find any of the names cheesy.
Who is your ideal client and why?
Someone with taste, who knows what he/she wants, but is open to new ideas. And a beautiul art and sculpture collection helps—and that doesn’t necessarily mean expensive, just interesting, and inspired!
Are you dismissive or sympathetic to pedestrian street florists?
You mean the corner delis? I think they are cool—they remind me of Europe.
What flower captures your core personality the most?
Green flowers! If I have to pick, I’ll say green gladiolas, but also large philodendron leaves, green roses, amaranths, ranenculus, orchids, and calla lilies.

Other than the typical dozen long stem roses, what flower arrangements capture
the essence of romantic expression?
