aRUDE comment
The great poem of display chants its stanzas of color from the Madeleine to the gate of Saint-Denis. —Balzac
With the boom in the textile trade in 1837 came the flowering of the Paris arcades. The arcades soon became a centerpiece for the display of luxury goods. In turn, this splendid showcase of luxury became a draw for tourists the world over. Then, as now, the City of Light still seduces with her pleasing decay, Paris’s gem-like architectural landscape by turns grand, medium or just small enough.
Each profile exemplifies varying degrees of beauty, aplomb and passions with which the talents invest in their practice.
This issue, aRUDE’s first Paris endeavor, will become an annual feature. By no means a comprehensive survey of the city, aRUDE Paris is, rather, an impressionistic sketch, a flaneur wandering the cityscape, say, taking it all in with a delicate and ceaseless eye.
For the here and now, we profile the great Parisian architect, Christian de Portzamparc, winner of the Pritzker Prize, architecture’s equivalent ofan Oscar. We also visit the architecture duo Jean-Christophe Poggioli and Pierre Beucler, who have done work at the Louvre and Dior.
The unintentional connaisseur of scandal, Catherine Millet, author of that succès d'estime, The Sexual Life of Catherine M., shows Mrs. Millet as an Apollonian lady and Dionysian subverter, at once negotiating two impulses, the decorous and the deviant. Marc Dachy expounds to Delano Greenidge on his forthcoming exhibition, a comprehensive survey of the Dada art movement at the Pompidou Museum in September.
Alas! That grand dame Catherine Deneuve allows us just a glimpse into her varnished legend. In consolation, we may acquaint ourselves with current French cinema’s young Turks — Christophe Barratier, Arnaud Desplechin, Laetitia Masson. Non-French actors have something to say as well; American classic Susan Sarandon contrasts her country with France, while sultry international star Nicole Kidman reconsiders the influence of the French New Wave in cinema.
Combining tints voluptuously blended on leather with fastidiously rendered techniques of scarification, tattoo and piercing, Olga Berluti — the only woman shoemaker in the world — vigorously explores her unyielding passion for men’s shoes. Meanwhile, Christian Louboutin subtly illuminates the poetics, flutters of pleasure, daintiness and sweet dangers of women’s shoes.
Finally, travel through Valerie Steele’s Paris: A Cultural History for an excerpt from her profile of Charles Baudelaire.
